Ranks

Rank is a way of creating a hierarchy within a community. Specifically within the Naval Special Warfare Development Group, rank is an indicator of authority and is a derived from a culmination of skill, experience, and time in service.

Enlisted Sailors do not hold “ranks” but hold a rate which is a combination of their rating and pay grade, for example Special Operator is the SEAL rating therefore a SEAL in the pay grade of E-6 would hold the rate of Special Operator First Class.

A member’s rank/rate can give a general impression of an individual’s length of service, amount of experience and contribution to the unit. As a more senior individual will generally have been with NSWDG longer and thus have more operations under their belt.

The more active and productive a member is, the faster they will advance and progress through the ranks. With promotion, however, comes added responsibility and higher expectations. Senior Sailors are billeted into leadership and staff positions due to their dedication to the unit and experience on how NSWDG conducts operations.

Naval Special Warfare Development Group utilizes the rank structure below and will be displayed as follows:

Entry level rate held by all new recruits and awarded after the acceptance of an application to join NSWDG.

Members are automatically advanced to the pay grade of E-2 at the beginning of Green Team Phase I Training.

Members are automatically advanced to the pay grade of E-3 at the beginning of Green Team Phase II Training.

Special Operator Third Class

Members are automatically advance to the pay grade of E-4 upon successful completion of Green Team Phase II Training.

Members must have served as an E-4 for at least one month, and shown an increase in ability and leadership; exceptionally qualified individuals can have the time requirement waived.

Special Operator First Class

Members must have served as an E-5 for at least two months, and shown an increase in ability and leadership; exceptionally qualified individuals can have the time requirement waived.

Chief Special Operator

Members must have served as an E-6 for at least two months, and shown an increase in ability and leadership; exceptionally qualified individuals can have the time requirement waived.

Members must have served as an E-7 for at least three months, and shown an increase in ability and leadership; exceptionally qualified individuals can have the time requirement waived.

Members must have served as an E-8 for at least three months, and shown an increase in ability and leadership; exceptionally qualified individuals can have the time requirement waived.

Command Master Chief

Reserved for the Senior Enlisted Leader for NSWDG, must have served as a SOCM for at least one month, and shown an increase in ability and leadership; this is a staff position as the Command Master Chief acts as the Commanding Officer’s principal advisor for all matters pertaining to the enlisted operators of NSWDG.

All members who are approved to serve as a Warrant Officer within NSWDG will be commissioned as a W-2.

W-3

Members must have served as a W-2 for at least one month, and shown an increase in ability and leadership; exceptionally qualified individuals can have the time requirement waived.

W-4

Members must have served as a W-3 for at least two months, and shown an increase in ability and leadership; exceptionally qualified individuals can have the time requirement waived.
